Top 10 Styling Tips to Polish Your Look

Updated: Mar 6, 2022

It takes more than just beautiful clothes to look put together. It’s about paying attention to details of how we care for our clothing and accessories that will polish up your overall appearance.

Below are our to ten styling tips and tools to help you keep your clothing and accessories in good condition and polish your appearance:

#1. Always check the mirror before you leave the house. Having dandruff, lint on hair on your clothing will instantly ruin a great outfit. Use a full length mirror to check for dandruff, dust or hair, especially on dark clothing before you leave the house. Keep a lint roller handy (both near your mirror at home and at work) to give it a quick roll before stepping out of the house and a big meeting. Make sure to use a handheld mirror to review the back of your outfit as well, this is very important as most of the hair and dandruff will be on the back of your clothes, especially when you have long hair.

#2. Keep your shoes in good condition. Scuffed shoes will kill any outfit --remember in first impressions, the eye goes down your body in a fraction of a second and shoes in good condition will shock whoever is looking at you. Leather shoes or boots (leather or vegan) should be polished and free of scuffs which usually occur on the tip and sides of the shoe or heel. At the start of each fall season, check your shoes and either shine them yourself or take them to a cobbler for maintenance, they will work their magic and make them look as good as new.

#3. Maintain your sweaters in good condition. At the start of the fall season inspect the condition of your sweaters. Look for pulled strings, pilling and lint—you can maintenance all of this yourself. Us a lint tool to remove all the pilling and for those pulled strings and use the snag nab it tool to mend—it’s so easy! You are going to love the way a well-maintained sweater looks and feels, it’s like wearing a new one each time. Inspect your knits again after each use.

#4. Wear jewelry. Jewelry automatically says you care about how you feel and look and you've invested on yourself. Wear dainty or statement jewelry, which ever is you but wear it! But if you are like many of us that sometimes have a lot of jewelry purchased over the years, but don’t find yourself wearing any of it or wearing the same pieces over and over, it might be because you need a better jewelry organizer. You won’t wear what you can’t see—be sure to select one that can showcase your everyday jewelry. And think outside the box by installing a jewelry system on your wall!

#5. Accessorize. Leveling up your style is all in the details! Have a great handbag--be sure to change it up at least once per season. Wear scarves and hats to add interest to any outfit. We love the juxtaposition of casual outfits with lux finishes! And same thing applies for your other accessories if you accumulated many of these over the years but don't wear them you need a storage system where you can see it all, it will increase their usage if they are visible. Use over the door shoe and purse organizer, if you need to get them off your floor or shelves. Your scarves and belts can also go on a special hanger and again, if you don’t have room in your closet, use a wall mounted organizer or roll up in a clear or cloth bins.

#6. Maintain your hanging clothes in good condition. Velvet keep your clothes from slipping off and in good condition. They are also space savers and will double the size of your closet instantly. We recommend velvet hangers with the hook built in or adding hooks so when you coordinate your outfits for the day/week you can keep the garments together. Otherwise use them to cascade your clothes to create additional space in your closet. Use hanger clips on velvet hangers to organize pants and skirts.

#7. Curate outfits and make them visible. Make your morning routine easy and pre-make outfits for the week; you’ll want to set them aside from the rest of your closet. If you have room in your closet designated an area for outfits, otherwise use a separate garment rack, install a wall mounted hook or over the door rack.

#8. Launder your clothes properly to keep them in good condition. Read all clothing labels that come with the o garment, so you know what material it is and the recommended maintenance. Most of your clothes, aside from t-shirts, socks and shorts, are going to require washing on the delicate cycle and low heat or flat dry. This means that you will have at least one mixed color load, for this we recommend using a delicate laundry detergent, color catcher laundry sheets to keep dark color dye from ruining your lighter color clothing and using laundry bags for your bras and other delicate garments. Also, pretreat stains and use the stain brush to gently lift the stain.

Flat or hang dry your clothes on a drying rack and use a steamer to instantly bring them back to life (you can steam eight garments for the same amount of time it will take to iron one—you’re welcome!).

#9. Keep your outerwear smelling fresh by airing out before storing. Outerwear like sweaters, cardigans, vests, dusters and coats and jackets as well as jeans should be aired out before hanging back in the closet. Knits absorbs smells and odors and allergens stick them (same reason you never want to sleep in your day clothes); your jeans, especially your premium denim should be washed as infrequent as possible to maintain their color and shape. Air these items out on a chair or on a hook for a few hours or over-night and us a spray to refresh and deodorize or DIY a mix of your own (use rubbing alcohol or cheap vodka with a few drops of lavender in a spray bottle).

#10. Have an organized closet to care for your clothing and so you can find what you need. Put your clothes away as neatly as possible and organize first by category and then by color. Fold your clothes using the KonMari method, this includes folding your sweaters and jeans. Use lavender and cedar satchels to keep clothes fresh and moth free.
