Fall is just around the corner and we’re in that in-between phase where we’re tired of the heat and we’re looking forward to cooling off in the fall but we’re also not quite ready to give some of our cute summer finds... and here's the thing, you don't have to! The key is figuring out how to marry your summer wardrobe with fall while incorporated the new season's trends.
Now worries, I got you! Keep reading.

Shopping for Fall 2020
As you shop for any new season, use the 80/20 rule: most of your closet should be classic styles that stand the test of time mixed in with some fun and trendy pieces (these only last about 1-3 years). For example, many of the classic styles that we are looking forward to this fall were trending 10-15 years ago, check out this classic Oprah episode “How to Look Great at Any Age.”
Think about the following as you plan your shopping:
How much do you want to spend on a trendy piece? A classic item like tweed jacket will be worth an investment, but other items like fuzzy slippers may not (not expensive ones anyway).
Just because something is trendy and its cute, it doesn't mean it's for you, to quote Stacey London in the Oprah episode, “Let your body type be your filter for what you wear”—yass!
Audit your closet to see what items you already have, you may just need to style it differently, or wear as is like a floral blazer or tweed jacket.
Make a shopping list of what you need to complete your outfits before you go out shopping.
Keeping Fall 2020 trends in mind, I've looked through my closet to see what I have and what I need. I also had both a faux leather and shimmery metallic sweaters, since they were also trending last winter but what I didn’t have is a tweed jacket (what?!) or a chain necklace--I would love a bold chunky gold one, but I opted for a more subtle one in tortoise shell since most of jewelry is dainty and I should first see if I can get comfortable with the bulky style. I also had a red bright purse, a bucket purse and hooped earnings.
My shopping list then consisted only of a few items, brown and black pointy boots (I have booties but I wanted a higher shaft to go with my culottes!), tweed jacket and a cape. I found them all except for the black boots--there are plenty out there but I am looking for some with a 2" stacked heel.
The way I incorporated fall into my summer clothes is by using cardies and open knit sweaters with sandals or ankle booties, depending on the weather. So think light layering and ensuring that if it gets warm, your base can stand on its own.
I’m going to walk you through some of the collages of outfits that I have created and before I do, I’d like to point out that a few styling themes are converging here: Fall 2020 trends, shop your closet, make a shopping list with 80/20 rule in mind, get outfit inspiration from Pinterest and finally the title of this blog, take your summer clothes into fall.
The little striped dress: Oh how I love thee! This is a highly versatile dress that can be worn alone or layered and it’s classic design (shift dress with stripes), so it is never out of style. It can be paired with many different color cardis and it can be worn with sandals, booties or boots. When you break up the horizontal lines in this manner, even women with wide hips can sport this look. Secondly, I also found some outfit inspo from Pinterest with the green vest and the pink cardi—I basically use this dress all-year-around! Note that I don’t belt the dress because the material is not flowy, it is very taut so it would not gather nicely.
Fall 2020: Tortoise shell chain necklace (J.Crew $14 on Poshmark) and red cross over purse (Sole Society $20 on Poshmark).
Red culottes. Over the summer I fell in love with culottes--this style of wide leg pants have been around for a long time and although they were not trending in high street they were trending on main street and I saw them everywhere! I bought quite a few of these pants in different materials and colors. Inspired by an image on Pinterest, I bought red culottes and I love the way I feel in them.
Fall 2020: Faux leather long sleeve top (Banana Republic $15 on Poshmark), patent leather loafers (new from Nordstrom), brown pointy-toe boots (J.Crew $49 new from Amazon).
White A-Line Dress: This A-line sleeveless dress is such a great base to create many, many outfits and because it’s denim it’s so much fun to create sporty looks.
Fall 2020: Bucket brown faux leather purse (Sole Society $40 on Poshmark).
The Little Black Dress: This is the quintessential LBD not just because black is flattering, but because of its versatility. The sheath silhouette in black is a great base to create outfits for the office, for a party or even for a weekend date—yes, you can dress it down too!
Fall 2020: Gray tweed jacket with jeweled embellishments (Banana Republic $8 from Savers) and gray shimmery/metallic Banana Republic sweater (Banana Republic $15 from Poshmark).
Black Culottes: I was totally inspired by Pinterest to pick these pants up, I just love the versatility! Again, these are not trending on high street, but who can resist them!
White Jeans: I love white jeans all year around and the outfits I have created include a white denim culotte to stay with the theme ;o) but you can make these outfits with your favorite fit i.e., skinny, boyfriend, etc.
Fall 2020: Striped cape (Loft $5 from Savers).
Following my system for shopping and styling, I have created a very versatile wardrobe to take me from summer to fall--and at a very low cost. Note that my styling is not super bold and I level up by layering and coordinating accessories. When accessorizing, even though I use necklaces, earrings and bracelets I try to only use one bold item at a time and the rest are subtle to ensure balance and only drawing attention to one area at a time.
Secondly, although there are many clothing and accessories that are trending, I chose to incorporate only a few, those that suited my personal style and are classic which I can continue to wear even when they are not trending. Let me repeat this, if it’s a classic design you can wear it anytime, anywhere, it does not have to be trending.
